Round 1: Dealing with Loss

In life there are often circumstances where you witness a person doing something that they know will end badly, and that has never done them any long-term good. And it can be so frustrating when these people go into that same situation, having been hurt in the past, when they expect different results. I am, unfortunately, one of those people.

My affliction is not a drug addiction, nor a tendency to put myself in abusive relationships (although it could almost be an abusive relationship of sorts). No, my affliction is far more foolish than that, I am, dear friends, a Richmond supporter.

Now there was a time, so the legend goes, when there was no shame in being a believer in the yellow and black. 1980, 1974, 1973, these are years that bring a tear to the eye of the faithful at their mere mention, they were the years of our last premierships. The days when the names like Kevin Bartlett, Royce Hart, Bourke, Barrot and Clay were not mere legends, but actual players. Those magical days….

Times have been tough. I was born in 1984. Since that time, the Tigers have made the finals only twice, and have not made a Grand Final. There have been very few occasions when I have gone into a weekend able to believe that we are a certainty to win. It’s been on those occasions when I’ve been proven wrong. Richmond have an uncanny ability to make you believe that things will be different this year, that we really can win games. That we will make the finals. That this year might just be the year. But every year, they hurt you. Every year you scream for them to be good.

This year I should be thankful. The bitter disappointment has kicked in early this year. I didn’t get a chance to really believe, which was good of them. 115 points is a lot to score in a football game. It is even more to get beaten by. The Western Bulldogs, our conquerors, didn’t make the finals last year (although most pundits believe they will give the premiership a decent go). I sat through all of it. I screamed. I yelled. When we kicked the first goal, I almost believed. Just for a moment. I always do, that’s all it takes….

“Our” Games

As a proud Aussie and an even prouder Melburnian, it was destiny that eventually I’d fall in love with the Commonwealth Games. And it didn’t really take long. Last weeks cycling and swimming had me taking a fairly close notice, especially the track cycling, I love watching a good men’s sprint. But this week has been the winner. Tuesday night the whole family went along to see the athletics and the atmosphere was unreal! We saw so many events all in one night. I loved it

And tonight (although by the time I get to hit “post” it’ll probably be yesterday) I’ve been watching the relays with bated breath, and cheered my heart out for the pole vaulters. The hockey today was amazing too, the goal that Nicki Hudson scored was about the best hockey goal I can ever remember. John Steffenson has the most explosive pace in the second 200m of the 400 that just blows opponents away. It’s so good to watch.
I know it’s too late now, but get into it. It’s been so exciting to watch, and to yell, and share in the celebration and the bitter disappointment. But I think the thing that was the biggest highlight for me was hearing Craig Mottram being interviewed tonight. He’d run a great race in the 5000m and come second, and was running exactly to plan in the 1500, when the guy behind him fell, tripping Mottram and essentially ending his race. So about 15 minutes after his race, and Mottram has had enough time to compose his thoughts, and gave a very honest interview, essentially saying that this did mean a lot to him, but that unfortunate events happen in life and you sometimes have to accept that. His graciousness in defeat was inspiring. It would be wonderful if we could engender that type of approach in all our athletes.
Go Aussie!

We Love Brad ‘Cos He’s A Victorian

Well I’ve not delved much into my sporting passions so far in this blog, but today’s news that Brad Hodge has been dumped from the Australian Test side is bordering on insanity. The man has averaged over 50 in his 5 test matches so far and has not put a foot wrong. He is being replaced by Damien Martyn who is bordering on being the most out-of form cricketer in all Australia, and Michael Clarke who hasn’t done anything since being dropped from the Test side for poor form. The selectors now have a tour party who is effectively the same team as we took to England, which was such a raging success.

I’m willing to put my (insignificant) credibility on the line and say that with the side the selectors have opted for, Australia will not be able to win this series. It is a sad day for cricketing administration in this country.
