  1. McKnight on McManus: The Inner Apologetic

    March 11, 2009 by Geoff

Fascinating reflections from Scot McKnight on Erwin McManus’ book “Soul Cravings”. He boils McManus’ point down to the idea that:

“If God is real and you are created by him, your soul already knows it.”

It’s interesting that Scot finds the idea to be one that he has “never seen a full scale discussion on”, because for me it’s certainly an idea that I feel like I’ve absorbed rather than been taught directly. And in many ways I’ve almost taken it as self-evident – it is almost another way of describing the “God-shaped hole” of yesteryear’s evangelistic tracts. From the Jesus Creed post again:

“How far can we go with this inner apologetic? How far will the inner apologetic lead us? Is there something written into the fabric of every human being that God exists and that we can only find genuine rest/happiness in that God?”

Interesting thoughts, I thought. Just putting it out there really.

  2. The Everyday Heresies

    February 26, 2009 by Geoff

Fascinating post at Jesus Creed, with the best bits being mostly in the comments. Scot has posted a short letter:

Scot, what are the “everyday heresies” the church embraces and/or espouses? Any insight? Wondering if complacency, consumerism, and the outsourcing of parental responsibility are more harmful than doctrinal irregularities or inconsistencies.

via A Brief Letter from a Friend: Everday Heresies – Jesus Creed.

It’s a fascinating question, and I think it’s a great opportunity to reassess what your Christianity looks like. For me, the question captured me in thinking about “outsourcing (parental) responsibility”, and considering what other responsibilities I’ve tended to outsource (given that I’m not a parent… yet). In lots of ways, I’ve outsourced any evangelistic responsibility to people who are more gifted, or at least more extroverted. Taking responsibility ourselves for just about anything seems to me to be a real dark area for us as the church, and for me personally.

I think another heretical trap I’ve fallen into is that knowledge = belief = faith = salvation.  As a fairly academically oriented person it’s so much simpler and nicer to centre my spirituality around knowledge and belief, rather than anything that requires action.

But enough of the wallowing. I want to know what “everyday heresies” we the church are ignoring – but with one proviso. You need to own it yourself: there’ll be no cases of “we the church” becoming “them the church”. If you’re lacking ideas (or just after an interesting read), have a look on Jesus Creed at the comments on the original post.
