  1. The Blogroll Shuffle

    October 28, 2008 by Geoff

Have just gone through my periodic purge of blogroll links and got rid of a few that were pretty old. At this stage I’ve only got one that I really wanted to replace it with (although I’ll likely think of others) – “itinerant and indigent“. Hamo linked to it a while ago, and I’ve been following ever since. It’s the story and thoughts of Phil, an Australian Aid Worker in Afghanistan, and his family.

Just at the moment, he and his family are having to consider leaving Afghanistan, because the violence is getting significantly worse. From a recent post:

Proximity, frequency, severity. These three elements are how I assess security changes and threats. Proximinty we have been able to control to some degree, by not going to those areas where the attacks were most frequent and most severe. But now the attacks have come to us. Severity we have little control over. Frequency we also cannot control. And it remains to be seen how frequent these severe, close attacks are. Is one attack a year too many? One attack a month? What about such an attack every six months?
Decision making | itinerant and indigent

So I’d encourage you to go have a read, as well as praying for Phil and his family. It’s a completely different world.

  2. Forty Feet Gopher

    July 24, 2007 by Geoff

Wanted to point out a few things of interest on the interweb. The first is to (belatedly) let anyone who didn’t already realise know that Hamo (the National Director of Forge now that Alan Hirsch has taken off for the US) has picked his blogging back up again, and has got already been putting out some amazingly good content. He can be found over at Backyard Missionary (www.backyardmissionary.com) and quite frankly, if you’re here for intelligent theological and practical missional discussion, go there first – he does it much better. Of course, if you’re here to find out what’s going on in the life of Geoff, he’ll have significantly less of that.

The second thing to draw your attention to is that Dan Wilt has got a wonderful piece on his blog called “The Scandal Of Particularity: Facing Jesus In A Postmodern Age” which strikes exactly the line that I think I’d draw in dealing with the tension between the battle-stations, hard-line fundamentalist, militant view of Jesus’ claim to exclusivity and the opposite side where Jesus becomes “one path to the same God”, which preaches a gospel that is more culturally acceptable but which loses a huge chunk of the meaning and mission of who Jesus is. But don’t take my word for it: have a read – it’s a long one but utterly worth the time.

The third thing is much less theological and a lot more silly. “Say No To Crack” got me onto the “Internet Anagram Server” – which is where the post title comes from: it’s an anagram of “TheGeoffReyport”. You put in the words you want anagrams for and away it goes. Other highlights for “TheGeoffRe(y)port” include:

    • Thy Groper of Feet
    • Top Ferret, eh Fogy
    • Heft Reef Orgy Pot
    • They Free Frog Pot

OK – enough silliness. You’ll have noticed a lack of posts on here: life’s getting busier with moving house and wedding stuff and youth all combining to rob me of blog posting time.

  3. New GeoffRe(y)port Feature – Starred Posts!

    October 10, 2006 by Geoff

Tired of reading the same old drivel that comes out of Geoff’s typing fingers? Wanting to broaden your blog-reading experience but don’t know where to start? Help is at hand. At the bottom of the big black bar on the right, there’s a listing of “Starred Posts”. These are items that have come up in my regular blog-reading habits, that are funny/interesting/challenging/etc. Basically, they’re there because I want to keep track of them, and I figure others might be interested in reading them. They’ll come from all sorts of blogs, and just because they’re there, doesn’t mean that I agree with what they say. But they should at least either provoke thought or give you a chuckle. Or both.

Edit – Plus if you think that my recommendations are often on the money, you can subscribe to the feed by clicking on the little  icon.

  4. What you should have been reading while I wasn’t posting…

    October 9, 2006 by Geoff

I’ve been pretty slack at posting anything (intensive week at Tabor), but here are some links to good things happening in the blogosphere that you might like to have a look at.

Letters to Christians in the US – Brian McLaren has got a few people from around the world to write open letters to the Christian community in the states. Makes good reading even for an Aussie like myself.

Context and Media – Scott Adams (Dilbert guy) has made some very interesting observations about the Middle East, while making a general point about how little evidence you can actually extract from media reports. He’s quickly becoming my favourite atheist :P

Grendel and God – Speaking of atheists, the Backyard Missionary guy (Hamo) has gone on holiday and turned his blog over to an atheist (insert mock shocked sounds here). He’s written some very thought provoking posts (and some interesting coffee snob revelations too) so get in and allow yourself to get challenged a bit.

No Hint Of Morality - She posted it up a while ago, but Christina’s post on the religious right and Christian ethics is a fantastic read. The piece by Brian McLaren that she links to is also very good.

And stay tuned – there’ll be some posts from my intensive week, with the first one being on narrative theology.

  5. New Blogroll Link – On Line Opinion

    September 25, 2006 by Geoff

On Line Opinion, which I’ve linked through to a few times previously, is an a really good starting point for anyone wanting to hear a diverse range of views on Australian Current Affairs – from far left to far right and pretty much everywhere in between. I’d recommend it as a worthy addition to any (Australian’s) blogging list.

And I’ve added it to my blogroll on the right hand side!
