25

There’s a time in almost every man’s life when he realises he’s unlikely to ever:

  • Become a professional sportsman
  • Represent his country at the Olympics
  • Play in a World Cup of pretty much any variety

At 25, with my only current sporting activity being an F-grade basketball game (and my designated role as the tall, fat guy who sits under the basket and tries to jump).

So today’s my birthday, and I thought I’d take the opportunity for a self-indulgent navel-gazing post taking stock of where life’s sitting at ripe old 25. I’m not even going to pretend to have proper structure here: I’ll think it, write it, publish it and regret it. Work is the thing that’s occupying the most head-space at the moment. While I’m in a better job than I was a year ago (both financially and in terms of interest levels), I’m still left with that feeling that it’s not really the vocation that I find myself envying in others who seem to have found theirs. That and an intense sense that there’s not really that many things that are “good” in an altruistic kind of way about the crew I work for, which is pretty unsatisfying. I’ve been looking at a few things – school teaching for one, but I’m really not sure about anything. Obviously with the economic climate looking the way it is, it’d be a stupid idea to just quit without something else lined up, but sometimes stupid feels right.

Marriage on the other hand, is certainly the part of life that feels the most like how it’s all supposed to be. We’re used to each other, Rebecca puts up with the filthy slob she married, and I get to spend my days with a truly amazing woman. We make each other’s world more fun. Gotta be happy with that.

And church is a bit of a funny one at the moment. We’re starting to feel more and more disjointed from the church we’ve been in – which in lots of ways has to do with not really living in the community that our church primarily exists to reach. So we’re in the process of re-evaluating where we belong, and looking at some options in that area. It’s taking a lot of prayer and a lot of consideration; perhaps even some regret especially given what a huge part of life Yarra Valley Vineyard has been for me. But there’s a time for everything, and there’s never a guarantee that any goodbye has to be the last one.

So there you are – a stocktake at the quarter century. Nothing too spectacular, and plenty left to ponder so there’s no danger that I’m about to stop being so self absorbed any time soon. Bad luck there.

Connecting Twitter and Facebook to the Blog

twitter_facebookI’ve been blogging for well over 3 years now, but there are still lots of friends aquaintances people-who-know-my-name who don’t know, or don’t care that I blog. That’s not a problem for me, but it’s always really nice when someone who does know me, finds the blog and comments – either digitally or in person. That’s fun – turning the monologue into directed conversation.

Anyway, without really thinking too much about it, ages ago when I had my first go at Twitter – I hooked up my facebook profile to update the status message whenever I tweet – with the standard “Twitter” app for facebook. Which when I started tweeting properly (about a month ago), meant that I got lots of fun comments from less-twittery folk, who were interested in whatever I happened to micro-blog about. Sometimes the facebook status looked stupid as a result – I’m sure a bunch of people were confused when I re-tweeted a re-tweet and there were @ symbols and hashtags all through my facebook feed, but otherwise it counted as a big win.

However the real revelation happened when I started tying up my blog updates to my twitter (and by extension, facebook). Suddenly all kinds of people started popping up on the blog, some leaving comments, others just dropping by. And in some ways it feels a bit riskier: some of the stuff on here I’m fine with complete strangers reading but if it’s someone I know…. there’s at least a danger I might be required to own my opinions. I’ve even got the photoblog and Wounded Tiger hooked up, so suddenly someone even noticed my novice attempts at photography and sports journalism.

So it’s lots of fun. I’d recommend it to any blogger. I’m using TwitterFeed for Wounded tiger and the photoblog, and the TwitterTools plugin for GeoffRe(y)port (that’s how I get those automated “Twitter Update” posts).  TwitterTools requires a WordPress blog, but TwitterFeed will work with any RSS feed. Plus you should get onto Twitter. If only because it’s been the most reliable way of getting up to date bushfire information without having to have the radio at your ear all day.

Boys and Girls

Male and female signsHad to laugh when I noticed this. Earlier in the week, I write “Burnt” – a fairly emotional reflection on being impacted by the bushfires around Melbourne. Receives 3 supportive comments.

Yesterday (well, last night really) I wrote “The Consultant & The Bartender” – a critical look at church paradigms. Receives 4 supportive comments.

The comments on the emotional post: all from ladies. The comments on the emotionless post: all from men. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much you avoid it, the stereotypes hit you smack in the face.

No grand point of any type – just found it funny is all.

Burnt

“I can’t believe the news today

I can’t close my eyes and make it go away”

– “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”, U2

I have loved that song for a long, long time, and yet those words have never had meaning like they do at the moment. This weekend has seen the worst fires that this fire-prone nation has seen since European settlement, and there are just so many horrific stories. I’m in the lucky ones: I don’t have friends who have died – though I do have some who have lost homes, or whose homes are still under threat. I feel like a fraud – this disaster has cost me nothing yet I still want to grieve – who does that?

But these fires have taken places and communities that I hold dear. I grew up in Bendigo, where the fire came as close as 2km from the absolute centre of town. I’ve played football at Kinglake where there have been too many fatalities to really be able to understand. I proposed to my wife in Marysville – a town that essentially no longer exists but for a shell, and a whole lot of heartbreak.

Even more than the places, it is the stories that hurt. Stories of people who could so easily be me; people who have lost family, friends, teachers, students, neighbours and essentially their whole communities. They are stories that I don’t want to hear, and yet feel compelled to listen to, watch and read. If feels so self-indulgent to grieve people I’ve never met – to want to recover from a loss I’m not experiencing. Let’s face it, this whole post is pretty pretentious. I want to explain myself, but I can’t. It just feels bad.

(Aside: let me encourage anyone out there to donate to the Red Cross who are coordinating the relief response locally. Especially if you’re an American – the Aussie dollar is doing crap against the US so your money will go about twice as far :P )

Rythm

Followers of my Twitter or Facebook (or people who just know Bec) are likely aware that I was without my wife for almost all of last week. She was leading at a kids camp, and so I was left without my wife for the longest period of time since we were married.

It didn’t go how I expected. To be really honest in some ways I’d been kind of looking forward to a bit of space, a chance to just chill out, and not be around Bec all the time. But what happened felt very different. There wasn’t anything specific that was different, and it wasn’t like there was much that I was doing that I would have done differently, but it was just this nagging feeling that life was out of rhythm. Just that life wasn’t quite right – not the way things should be.

I was chatting with Paul about it on the Thursday, and he hit me with a bit of a stunner. He highlighted just how difficult it must be when a spouse of 25+ years passes away. I can’t imagine.

It’s Storytime Kids

For those of you who might care, as part of doing the whole “Missional Tribe” social networky thing, I’ve added another blog to the arsenal – “Geoff’s Storytime” at http://geoff.missionaltribe.org. I don’t think the name will stay, but until I think up something better, it’ll do. The idea will be to put fantastic stories on missional adventures, blah blah blah. You get the idea. There’s already a post up there, and I might even recycle a few GeoffRe(y)port pearlers to keep the customers satisfied.

(Edit – The link was wrong before – it’s missionaltribe.org not .com. So if you were wondering why the link wasn’t working, that’d be why!)
