  1. An Open Letter To The Geelong Football Club

    September 24, 2007 by Geoff

    Dear Geelong,

I realise that I have not been your greatest advocate. I understand that throughout this year I have taken a great deal of pleasure in relaying my belief that you would choke in late September, and that you might not really be the “real deal”. I confess I’ve even offered up scorn to the selection of Mooney and Milburn in the All Australian side. Understand that this is partly because you have hurt me – both in demolishing the shell of a team that the Tiges have been this year, and through Gary Ablett Snr’s nasty habit of kicking 15 goals or more against the yeller and black back in the bad old days.

But as hard as it might be to believe: I like you. I think you play a beautiful style of footy, and I’ve enjoyed watching you play this season. You have restored the respectability of this great footballing state, and proven that attacking football can win big games. There is no doubt in my mind that I’ll be wishing on the blue and white this weekend, rather than that self-absorbed arrogant mob from Alberton.

So it is in the spirit of reconciliation and friendship that I make this one, heartfelt request:

    Please, PLEASE.

    Don’t choke

    Yours Sincerely,

Geoff Matheson – Lover of all good things in football and disliker of the size of Mark Williams’ head.

  2. The Future Of TheGeoffRe(y)port

    September 18, 2007 by Geoff

As you’ll have noticed, activity here on the report has been nigh on non-existent, since I started working on Amateur Theology. So far AT seems to be going quite well, but I thought it was probably pretty important to let you all know roughly where I see TheGeoffRe(y)port sitting now that I have another outlet for my theological musings and ruminations.

In the long term: I’d really like to have TheGeoffRe(y)port be roughly what it is right now, with slightly less theoretical theology, more commentary on news and current affairs, and slightly more personal slant on things. Ultimately I’m hoping that Amateur Theology will reach a place where I’m writing about 25% or less of the posts on there, so that it becomes a much more collaborative blog rather than Geoff’s blog that some other people post on once in a while. So TheGeoffRe(y)port is likely to contain more direct reflections on things that happen to me, while my Amateur Theology posts will probably end up more theoretical.

So the long and the short of it is: please stick around. It might get worse before it gets better, because between launching AT and the aforementioned wedding prep, my blogging time for the report has been reduced to not very much. But I won’t forget you, friends.

PS. Thanks to all the people who very generously have clicked on the advertisement links that they are only ever genuinely interested in – I received my first cheque from Google the other day – so there you go. Crime might not pay, but blogging kind of does.

  3. Marriage Milieu

    September 14, 2007 by Geoff

Many of you who meander around the musings of my mesmerisingly magnificent Rebecca will understand the monumental mission that managing the initial ceremonial milestone of matrimony can morph into. Without a doubt, the marriage milieu can become magnified beyond most matter of fact measures. Plus there’s all that alliteration to worry about…

Small talk with anyone I haven’t spoken with for more than a few weeks always begins with: “How’s the wedding preparation going?” Now there’s a question without an interesting answer if ever I heard one. Because as much as people are asking out of genuine concern and interest, the truth is that they don’t really care that you’re tossing and turning about whether you want native flowers or non-natives, will serve those delicious little whatevers and blah, blah blah. And I understand, because I have a problem: I have to try really hard to have an opinion.

I know the things that I like about weddings: the service reflects the people, the venue isn’t too hideous, likewise the wedding party’s attire and good food at a reception. After that, it’s minor details. Would I have ever noticed flowers in a wedding? Not really. Have I ever thought about what colour I’d want my suit to be? Probably not more than once or twice.

It’s not a lack of caring. Bec’s been amazing in wanting to make sure that I have input into all the decisions being made, and I really want to do this thing together, not have Bec wear most of the load. But I look at two pictures of flowers, and that’s exactly what I see. Two pictures of flowers. Experience says that flowers make things look prettier. Some flowers fail at that, others do particularly well. That’s as far as my opinions on flowers go, and it’s a real effort to get any more out of me.

Ah, the tribulations of the wedding preparation

  4. Amateur Theology has launched

    September 3, 2007 by Geoff

I’m sure you’re probably sick of hearing about it, but I’ve launched Amateur Theology over the weekend, and it’s now got the first theology post over there. So from now on, I’d expect that pretty much all of my theology posts will go over there, and this blog will remain for personal/sporting/political stuff. And again I’d encourage anyone who has something they’d like published up on Amateur Theology to email me the submission at submissions@amateurtheology.org. I’m really hoping that it will be more than just a second blog for my crazy ideas and that we can actually build up a whole bunch of thoughts there.

The RSS Feed for Amateur Theology is at http://amateurtheology.org/feed/ if you wanted to subscribe: should hopefully be worthwhile.
