Emerging from Christian Education?
Having decided not to put up with building an attractional “Christendom” model youth ministry and instead opting to concentrate on missional-ising our teenagers through a pretty significant emphasis on discipleship, I’m left a little bit with the quandary of exactly how to approach the concept of mission amongst your peers, when in reality we’ve got a group who are mostly all at the same Christian school, with mostly Christian friends and it it in this environment that they find the vast majority of their friendships and social context. These kids, are living in a world where it can certainly appear, if only while they’re in school, that “Christendom” is still a reality for them.
My feeling (and this is just really more of a hunch than a particularly full blown idea) is that the only answer is to call them to a more radical discipleship than they experience in their existing environment. To challenge the things that aren’t right in their world, and to have them look beyond their individual surroundings. I’m beginning to think that we’ve got to blow away their perception that the world is in a lovely, happy state; and instead call them to see the brokenness and hurt of humanity’s current state.
This probably doesn’t do a lot to help other people, but it’s certainly helping me explore the issues!

Sounds great Geoff, looking forward to seeing how you go. I had a friend who was in a paid position with a youth group who wanted to do the same thing. Unfortunately he didn’t last to long in that Church after he had that idea and tried to implement it.
That’s the beauty of volunteerism – I get fired and I’ve got my Friday nights back!
Yep you can push the limits a bit more been a volunteer. Any news on a new leader at yvvcf?
An offer has been made, and we’re waiting for the next few weeks to find out whether or not we have one. It’s pretty exciting, but also a little bit daunting.
