Top 6 Happy Songs

Well my “Top 21 words that are fun to say” has got me in the mood for some lists. And given that I’m happy today, and listening to music, here is my top 6 songs to play when I’m happy.

  1. “Sweetest Thing” – U2. This is the sort of song that I love when I’m happy, and when I’m not, can just mke me more unhappy. But you’ve gotta love it. “Ain’t love the sweetest thing?”
  2. “Mack The Knife”. Deliberately left out the artist because it doesn’t matter much. Frankie Sinatra, Michael Buble, hey, I even like Robbie Williams’ version. This is one that unless you’re at work or on a train, you’ve just gotta sing along to.
  3. “Prisoner of Soceity” – The Living End. Not a particularly joyously themed song (“We don’t need no-one, to tell us what to do”), but a rocking fist pumper of a song, that makes you want to rock out like nothing else.
  4. “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” – Cake. A bassline to die for (bow, ba bow ba bow, ba bow bow bow bow bow bow), and classic lines like “I want a girl who gets up early; I want a girl who stays up late” it’s a real dance around the house song.
  5. “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Queen. Do I really need to say anymore. Regularly invokes involuntary karaoke, regardless of environment. A classic in the truest sense of the word.
  6. “How Great Thou Art”. Gives me a “triumphant” feeling when I’m belting out the chorus like no other song I know of. Hairs on the back of the neck stuff. Pure gold.

So, what have I missed out on? What songs do you play when you’re happy? Don’t be a passive mute – how boring. Contribute. Be part of the global conversation.

Hard to believe you’re the son of a man whom I’ve personally heard say, “Music doesn’t really move me”

Most played songs in my iTunes “Happy” playlist (I really do have one) are:
    About Love, by the Choir
    Mansions, by Burlap to Cashmere
When She Sees Me, by the Choir
Wide Eyed Wonder, by the Choir
Harvest at the End of the World, by Charlie Peacock
    Fly, by Jars of Clay

He’s not even making that up – it really doesn’t. The only song that you’ll ever get any emotion out of dad from is the Richmond theme song! :D

Like the idea of a “happy” playlist for the iPod. Reckon I’ll have to get that together.

hmm, I’d actually have to agree with some on your list

Living End – Prisoner of society, Second Solution, and also their cover of Tainted Love (B side dancing must)… Happy in a leaping headbanging kind of way – best listened to loud and in the house alone.

Black Betty (Spiderbait)- makes me move.

May not be politically correct – but anything by Franz Ferdinand – instant dance mode – fabulous running music. Also full of funky bass.

These songs are my leap around wildly kind of happy songs (a list subject to change), but I think there is also the mellow golden moment kind of happy music…

Sweetest thing – gotta be a driving around on a balmy night with the stereo up and fragrant summer air in your hair type of song…

Anything on Jack Johnson’s album “On and On” – chill out weekend sounds

May sound a bit dorky – but a wee bit of good classical can elicit the feel good vibes – eg Bach’s cello concertos (especially as I have learned some of them on my classical guitar, and they therefore feel like old friends)…

That version of “Tainted Love” was an unlucky omission. If “Prisoner of Soceity” wasn’t already there – would have got a gig.

Funky bass really does make a happy song – doesn’t it.

You forgot “Happy Song,” best performed lived by Delirious.
