One of the things I most admire about my dad is the way that he is exactly the sort of person that you want in a crisis. He comes in, assesses the situation, has a plan and does exactly what needs to happen. It’s one of those areas that I’d love to be “more like dad”.

And today I had a couple of goes at it. First, I ended up behind Analise, Bec and Susannah on the way out to Dan’s place, and we took the really steep shortcut way through. Got about halfway up and poor Analise’s Gemini was having some real trouble; to the point where she stalled and started rolling back at me. She then pulled back to get out of my way, and I got up the hill, and was waiting to see if the girls were going to get up there too. Unfortunately, moving back out of my way, Analise had got herself bogged.

So I got to be the knight in shining armour and helped the poor damsels in distress, we pushed the car out of the hole (after 3 goes) and we were on our way again. To tell you the truth, it really was a lot of fun – being the manly man.

Then when we were leaving, once again we were going at the same time as the carfull of girls, but this time they were following us (I was giving Tom a lift home). We got through a roundabout and were a good 200m down the road and the girls hadn’t followed us. Pulled over, waited for a bit and they still hadn’t come; so we went back to find that poor Ana had put a decent divot into the front of her car courtesy of the bull bar from a 4WD. No-one was hurt, but the car will stay there overnight. So we helped out with getting the car away from the roundabout, and ended up giving Bec and Susannah a lift home, once Analise’s parents got there to look after her.

There’s just something about being able to help out in those situations that really seems to hit the buttons in terms of validation for us blokes, or at least it certainly does for me. Being a good person in a crisis must appeal to some of the action film, Bruce Willis type instinct in me, but it certainly does make you feel valuable. Just a shame that poor Ana had to have a car accident for me to feel validated.
